Friend,
By now you are most likely feeling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic in your hometown. Maybe you're taking care of children who are stuck at home due to school closures; maybe you're dealing with the loss of a job; or maybe you're even fighting the sickness itself. I want you to know that we at Run With Hal are here to support you through this strange and challenging time.
Your training has no doubt been altered as social distancing rules become more urgent and races are cancelled or postponed. So I wanted to reach out to you with some thoughts and suggestions about training through this time. You may feel like it's hopeless to continue, but I'm here to tell you that continuing to run (at a reduced volume and pace) is a great way to clear your head, stay healthy, and preserve as much of a sense of normalcy as we can—even if there's no particular race in sight. Here are the things you should consider about running through a pandemic:
As runners, we are generally healthier than the general public. But there is one moment when we become vulnerable to illness, according to research by David Nieman, DrPH, director of the human performance laboratory at Appalachian State University. Based on a study of runners at the Los Angeles Marathon, Dr. Nieman showed that runners are vulnerable to colds and even the flu immediately before and immediately after a marathon.
This is because peak training (all those extra miles we run leading into the taper) lowers our immune function, breaking down our natural barriers against illness. As for the week after the marathon, that's another immune system wrecking ball. We get a cold—or worse, the flu—more during that window than the general public.
Apart from your own health, it's also important to respect your local social distancing regulations in order to protect those who might be vulnerable to the virus. The cancellations of key races might be difficult to accept, but they could save lives in the long run.
Let me be blunt: I know how hard you've trained for this singular moment in your life, but you will most likely need to modify your plans in the age of coronavirus. Fortunately this is also an incredible opportunity to focus on the more subtle aspects of your training, and come out the other side a healthier, more driven, and stronger runner. Here's what I suggest in the coming weeks to help you stay healthy and motivated.
Nobody anticipated the extent to which the coronavirus would affect our lives as runners. If you're still able to run, just remember that this is not the time to be a hero. Picking one of the five options above may be the smartest move you make as a long distance runner.
Good luck and stay safe,
Hal
